Our main desire at The Baan Dek Montessori, as concerns extracurricular activities and events, is to expose our students to diverse artistic mediums and cultural experiences, one of which must certainly be film. To this end, we have decided to host and sponsor a “Children’s Film Festival”, to accompany our already existing “Grand Synthesis Museum” and “Music Listening Station”. Sometimes the classroom just needs to be extended beyond the classroom, as it were, to enrich and further the development of our students, aesthetically.

We firmly believe that the cinema can play an instrumental and instructive role in the education of our students and we would like to incorporate the cinema in some measure. How best to accomplish this was our fundamental task. We have decided an annual film festival dedicated to children would be appropriate. Of course, there are certain challenges that we faced when organizing this event. Typically, films, especially children’s films, are not directed towards children. However surprising that may seem, we usually find this to be the case...so, we have tried hard to find a few short films that convey the power of the cinema.

We would like to draw attention to the fact that there are other cinematic avenues than just the mainstream Hollywood ones - and the children should be exposed to these currents - and therefore we are proud to introduce Best of Fest as our selection for this year’s event. As a disclaimer: Whilst we see the cinema as complimenting the education of our students, we primarily envision it as an extracurricular experience. That is, an event sponsored and promoted by The Baan Dek Montessori, but that is not part of the Montessori education.
